Two cherubs pluck a golden harp in this die-cut scrap, a small decorative piece of the sort that circulated in the late 1800s and early 1900s as greeting-card decoration and scrapbook material. Die-cut scraps were stamped from thin, often chromolithographed paper, so the shaped edges, bright gilt and lightly embossed details were meant to be cut out, pasted and handled. Cherubs with harps belong to a long tradition of angelic music in Christian art, which these sentimental, lightly comic figures softened into something suited to Victorian parlors and children's albums.
