Lead with what sets this piece apart: it is a die-cut scrap, an angel shaped by cutting the paper out and then embossed, with a cross held in its arms. Die-cut scraps were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when chromolithographed paper ornaments were sold in sheets and pasted into albums, used on greeting cards, or tucked into letters as small tokens of sentiment. Makers stamped raised patterns into the paper so that the surface caught light and looked more like metalwork or lace than flat printing. The cross suggests a religious message, often tied to Easter, a funeral, or a gift of faith, and the angel as a messenger of hope fit that purpose well. Look closely at the raised edges and the fine detailing, which show how much handwork went into these small objects.
