Few subjects in the Victorian scrap trade were as whimsical as the bearded elf shown here, who hauls a bundle over one shoulder with the air of a traveling peddler. Die-cut scraps like this one were printed in sheets, cut out by hand or by machine, and pasted into albums, on greeting cards, or onto envelopes. Makers in England and Germany turned out enormous numbers of them from the 1860s onward, drawing on folklore, children's book illustration and the Christmas and Christian imagery of the day. Noticing the crisp embossed edges and the soft chromolithographed colors is a good way to appreciate the craft behind such small, ephemeral pieces.
