Few subjects in the Victorian scrap trade were as popular as children dressed as angels, and this die-cut example pairs a small winged figure with a garland of flowers and a pink ribbon. Scraps like this were printed in sheets, cut out by hand or by machine, and pasted into albums, greeting cards and keepsake books, where the bright chromolithographed colors and embossed edges made them prized. The angel-and-child theme drew on a long tradition of religious imagery, but by the late nineteenth century such figures had also become sentimental decoration for holidays and family occasions. Collectors today value these scraps as everyday artifacts that show how ordinary households handled faith, childhood and ornament at the same time.
