A rosy-cheeked winged child wearing a garland of flowers sets this picture apart from the more solemn angels that usually fill this board. The soft pink tones and blossoms give the figure a playful, almost festive air, the kind of sentimental imagery that was popular in illustrated books, greeting cards and decorative prints from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Artists of this period often drew on the old tradition of the putto, the winged infant borrowed from classical and Renaissance art, and softened it for domestic audiences. Look closely at the wings and the flower chain, which show how such images blended religious symbolism with ordinary household sentiment.
