Among the pansies in this chromolithographed scrap, a winged child angel hovers with the soft, rounded features typical of Victorian sentimental art. Scraps like this were made in large numbers from the 1860s onward, printed in many colors and cut out to decorate valentines, scrapbooks, and greeting cards. Pictures of cherubic children with flowers were especially popular, since they combined religious feeling with the affection people showed toward children and the gentle language of flowers. The pansy, associated with thoughts and remembrance, adds a quiet meaning worth noticing.
