Two winged angels hover over a single white dove, a motif that turns up again and again on Victorian scrap, the small die-cut paper pictures sold for pasting into albums and cards. Scraps like this were produced in large numbers by chromolithographic printers, often in Germany, England and the United States, and they were prized for their delicate cut edges and bright, layered colors. Angels and doves carried sentimental weight in the 19th century, standing for peace, the soul and divine blessing, so such scraps were exchanged as tokens of affection and used to decorate greeting cards, valentines and scrapbooks. Look closely at the thin embossed edges and the way the figures are built up from separate pieces of color.
