A July 1885 engraving from *Harper's Monthly*, its caption card marks this print as advertising tied to fundraising. That year the statue was still arriving from France in pieces, and its completion depended on money raised for the granite pedestal in New York Harbor, a campaign that drew newspapers and magazines into the effort. Illustrations like this one kept the project in front of readers and show how the monument's image was used to build public support before it stood in the harbor.
