Few trains of the 1930s looked as modern as the Burlington Zephyr, and this view places it at East Dubuque, Illinois, a small river town on the Mississippi across from Dubuque, Iowa. The Zephyr was a lightweight, stainless steel streamliner built by the Budd Company and powered by a diesel-electric engine. It went into service on the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad in 1934, when its record-setting run from Denver to Chicago drew wide attention to the idea of faster, cheaper passenger travel. The picture dates to April 1940, a few years after the train had become a familiar sight across the Midwest.
