Helena, on the Mississippi bluffs in eastern Arkansas, is the setting here, and the river stood at a gauge reading of 52.1 feet when this photograph was taken on May 9, 1927. The picture shows people and livestock being moved onto barges, one of the improvised ways communities evacuated residents during the great flood that spring. The 1927 Mississippi flood inundated large parts of the lower valley and displaced hundreds of thousands of people, and the Red Cross ran relief camps across the region. The image records that emergency work at the riverfront, where the water had made ordinary transport impossible.
