Few men of the Louis XIV era spent as much of their career at sea as Claude de Forbin, and this portrait presents him as a naval man rather than a courtier. Born in Provence in 1656, Forbin rose through French naval and privateering service, fighting against the Dutch and English and later serving on a diplomatic mission to Siam. His memoirs, published after his death in 1733, offer a frank account of life aboard French warships. The engraving is undated and its attribution is uncertain, so it is best read as a likeness made for a reader of his reputation, not as a record drawn from life.
