This engraving is titled *Minerve*, the French form of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, crafts, and strategic war, whom the Greeks called Athena. Engraved by J.J. Avril after a drawing by Granger, the print belongs to a long European tradition of classical subjects that artists and publishers reproduced for education, decoration, and the taste for antiquity. The caption card gives no date, so its exact moment of production is uncertain. Still, the image shows how Enlightenment and later neoclassical artists presented the goddess: calm, armored, and composed, with her helmet and spear signaling that wisdom and warfare were, in her case, two sides of one character.
