The title most likely refers to Étienne-Nicolas Méhul, the French composer, so this is probably a portrait of the man rather than a scene. Méhul (1763–1817) wrote operas during and after the French Revolution and later taught at the Paris Conservatoire, where he influenced a generation of composers. Lithography, the method used for this sheet, was invented in 1796 and spread through France in the following decades, becoming a common way to produce portraits of public figures. The record gives no date or artist, so the print's exact origin remains unconfirmed.
