Printed in black and white on a sheet about 76 by 61 centimeters, this 1879 lithograph presents Miss Jane Coombs as a name meant to draw an audience. It was produced by the Metropolitan Litho. Studio on Warren Street in New York, and the design is signed by R. Muller, with J.E. Jackson credited as agent, a reminder that such posters were part of a business of promoting touring performers. Theatrical posters of this period were pasted on walls and hoardings ahead of a show, so a portrait and a large printed name did much of the selling. The copyright notation shows the image was also registered with the U.S. Copyright Office.
