A young woman crouches behind the plate as her teammate prepares to swing, with the players identified in the negative's title as Lucile Boyd, catching, and Mary Cook, at bat. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that produced news and feature pictures in the years after World War I, made the image around 1919, a period when women's baseball was often staged as a novelty for local crowds. The names come from the company's notes on the negative and have not been independently verified, so they should be read with that in mind. The glass plate also shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which is common in negatives of this age.
