A deteriorated daguerreotype from 1844 shows a seated figure, and the damage is part of its story: the silvered copper plate has clouded and flaked in places, the image surfacing only where the mirror-bright surface survives. Daguerreotypes were made on polished silver-plated copper sheets, each one a unique positive with no negative to reprint from, so surface loss of this kind is permanent. Portraits of this period required subjects to sit motionless for many seconds or even minutes in bright light, which makes the pose and stillness a record of the sitting itself. Dating from the earliest years of commercial photography, the plate is a rare survivor of a process that was already fragile when it was new.
