The sitter here is unnamed, and that absence is part of what makes the plate worth a closer look. Made in 1844, it is a daguerreotype, a process announced in France in 1839 that fixed a camera image directly onto a polished silver-coated copper plate. Exposures then ran from several seconds to minutes, so sitters had to hold still, often with a head rest hidden behind them. Few portraits from this earliest decade of photography survive with their original mirror-like surface intact, and the image appears only when the plate is tilted against a dark background.
