A seated older man in a dark suit, captured in a daguerreotype dated 1844, places this plate among the earliest attempts to fix a human likeness on a silvered copper surface. The sitter is unnamed in the record, so the portrait speaks through posture, clothing and the mirror-like sheen of the plate itself. Daguerreotypes of this period required exposures of several minutes in bright light, which asked the sitter to hold still and produced a sharp, detailed image that can only be seen fully at certain angles. Worth noticing is how the plate reflects the viewer's own face as the image shifts, a quality that distinguished daguerreotypes from paper prints of the same decade.
