Daguerreotypes from 1844 are rare survivors of the earliest years of photography, when each image was a single positive plate on polished silver and could not be copied. This portrait shows a balding man in a dark suit, and the record gives no name, so the sitter's identity remains unknown. In the 1840s, a sitter had to hold still for several minutes in strong daylight or a glass-roofed studio, which is why many faces from this era look fixed and serious. The mirror-like surface of the plate also means the image shifts in tone as the viewer moves, a quality worth noticing in person.
