A daguerreotype from 1844 shows a seated man whose identity has been lost, though the image itself keeps his bald head and posture in sharp, mirror-bright detail. The process was barely five years old at the time: Louis Daguerre had announced it in 1839, and the plates it produced were unique positives on polished silver-coated copper, so each portrait was one-of-a-kind and could not be duplicated. Sitters of this period often had to hold still for many seconds, which makes the calm, formal pose worth noticing. Portraits like this one give historians a direct look at how ordinary people presented themselves in the early days of photography.
