A seated man in a dark coat, caught in a daguerreotype made around 1844, is a reminder of how early photographic portraiture really was. The daguerreotype process, introduced in 1839, produced a single positive image on a silvered copper plate, so every sitter had to hold still for minutes in bright light, and the result could not be copied the way later prints could. Because this sitter is unidentified, the picture rests on its materials and its moment: the mirror-like surface, the sharp detail, and the formal pose typical of the period. Portraits like this were usually made for families or for personal keeping, not for publication.
