Few details survive about the sitter of this 1850 daguerreotype, but the object itself tells much of the story. The image is a direct positive on a silvered copper plate, sealed behind glass and set in a decorative case, the way such portraits were usually kept and handled. By 1850 the daguerreotype had been public for about a decade and was the most popular portrait process in America and Europe, prized for its sharp detail and mirror-like surface. Viewers often had to tilt the plate to find the image, so the sitter appears only when light and angle allow it.
