Edwin Markham, the poet best known for "The Man with the Hoe," is the subject of this May 1922 photograph, taken in Washington, D.C., around the time the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated on May 30. The print comes from the National Photo Company's collection, a commercial studio that recorded the capital's buildings, monuments and public occasions during the 1920s. The record notes that Markham dedicated a poem to the memorial, which ties his portrait to the national tribute to Abraham Lincoln that the building was meant to be.
