Marianne, the allegorical figure of the French Republic, takes center stage in this 1916 poster urging citizens to buy the second National Defense Loan, or *2e Emprunt de la Défense Nationale*. France financed much of its World War I effort through such bond drives, asking ordinary people to lend money to the state as well as to support the troops. Posters like this one used the Republic's most recognizable symbol to make that appeal personal and patriotic. The poster is signed by the artist A. Robaudi and printed in color by offset lithography, a process that allowed large runs for display across French towns and cities.
