Few recruiting posters from the First World War relied on words alone, and this one quotes the novelist H. Rider Haggard, speaking in St. John, New Brunswick, in August 1914, the month Britain entered the war. Its appeal is blunt: if England falls, Canadians fall with her, and every man must go. Printed in 1915, it reflects the early Canadian recruiting drive, when the Canadian Expeditionary Force was being raised through public speeches and posters like this one. Haggard, best known for adventure novels such as *King Solomon's Mines*, was a well-known public figure, and his name gave the message extra weight with readers.
