A quarter-plate daguerreotype in a decorative case, this view of a house and yard keeps a distant vantage, so the building sits small within its grounds. The case's central quatrefoil holds a floral design, a common ornament on cased images of the period. Daguerreotypes were introduced in 1839 and were made on silvered copper plates that had to be viewed at an angle to show the image. Because the photographer is unidentified, the picture is most useful as an example of how ordinary domestic subjects were recorded in the decade or two after the process appeared.
