The title etched into this plate reads "McAllister's house, Oak St., Philada," while the label on the case gives the location as West Penn Square and credits the picture to W.Y. Mc. Taken in 1844, only about five years after Louis Daguerre announced his process in France, it shows how quickly the new technique was turned on ordinary city buildings. The small sixth-plate size and Angel case were typical of the daguerreotypes sold to a middle-class public in the 1840s. The original label, with its record of later acquisition, makes it a useful starting point for tracing early Philadelphia photographers.
