Set against a clear blue sky, the granite faces of four presidents rise from the Black Hills of South Dakota, with Thomas Jefferson second from the left. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began the carving in 1927 and intended it to celebrate the nation's first 150 years. After Borglum died in 1941, his son Lincoln Borglum completed the work. Jefferson was chosen in part for his role in the country's expansion, and his face remains one of the monument's most recognizable features.
