Carved into the granite of the Black Hills in South Dakota, the four faces of Mount Rushmore are shown here lit after dark, a rarer view than the daytime scenes most visitors know. The monument was sculpted between 1927 and 1941 under the direction of Gutzon Borglum, with his son Lincoln Borglum finishing the work after his father's death in 1941. Its presence of Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln was meant to mark the nation's first 150 years, and the night illumination highlights the sheer scale of the carving against the dark hillside.
