Few aerial views of the Black Hills carry as much weight as Air Force One passing over Mount Rushmore, where Thomas Jefferson's face sits second from the left, between Washington and Lincoln. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began the carving in 1927, and work stopped in 1941 with the monument in roughly its present form. The call sign Air Force One applies to any aircraft carrying the president, so the picture links a working symbol of the office to a monument honoring the men who held it.
