The face of Thomas Jefferson is one of four presidential heads carved into the granite of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota, alongside Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, and Lincoln. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began the work in 1927, and crews blasted and drilled the rock until the faces were completed in 1941, after Borglum's death that year. Jefferson's face was originally planned for a different spot, but a flaw in the rock led to its being moved, a change that shows how much the carving depended on the stone itself. The monument remains one of the most recognizable works of public sculpture in the United States.
