Carved into the granite of the Black Hills in South Dakota, Thomas Jefferson's face sits at the left of the four presidents on Mount Rushmore, the monument designed by Gutzon Borglum and carved between 1927 and 1941. This photograph, shared on Flickr under a Creative Commons license by a user named kurt magoon, shows the figure from a viewpoint that lets visitors see how the sculptors worked the rock into a likeness of the third president. Jefferson's inclusion was meant to represent the nation's expansion, particularly the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, which roughly doubled the country's territory. Among the four faces, his is often noted for the tension between that legacy and the fact that he enslaved many people over his lifetime.
