Carved into the granite of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota, the faces of four presidents rise roughly 60 feet high, with Thomas Jefferson set second from the left. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum began the work in 1927, and it continued under his son Lincoln Borglum until 1941, when federal funding ran out. Jefferson's inclusion reflects his role in the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the nation's size, and the monument remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the American West.
