Three snow-capped peaks rise above the Cascade Range in this view, taken from a pass west of Camp 40: Mount Jefferson, Mount Hood, and Mount Adams. Mount Jefferson's name honors Thomas Jefferson, which explains its place on this board. The lithograph belongs to the mid-1850s, when federal surveys of the Pacific Northwest were mapping routes for a possible transcontinental railroad and recording the region's landscape for officials and the public. The record's attribution to the Oregon survey materials is unverified, so the exact camp and survey party are uncertain.
