Monticello, the hilltop home Thomas Jefferson designed near Charlottesville, Virginia, appears here in an exterior view engraved in wood for the July 1853 issue of *Harper's New Monthly Magazine*, where it ran on page 146. By then Jefferson had been dead for more than two decades, and the house had passed into private hands after his estate's debts forced its sale. Illustrated monthlies like *Harper's* helped Americans see famous places they might never visit, and this engraving reflects growing public interest in Jefferson's house as a national landmark.
