Inside a railway car fitted out for surgery, this view shows an operating room on a hospital train, a rolling clinic built to carry wounded men away from the front or from crowded receiving stations. Hospital trains were used extensively in the First World War, when rail was the fastest way to move casualties to base hospitals where they could get proper care. The George Grantham Bain Collection, from the Bain News Service, is best known for news pictures from the 1910s, and this glass negative belongs to that body of work. The record gives no firm date, so the exact trip or unit is unknown, but the compact layout of the room, with its equipment packed into a moving car, is worth studying for how medical care was adapted to the railway.
