This view of Corso Venezia in Milan is one of several city scenes from a bound album that also includes Genoa, Pisa, Nice, Avignon, Parma, Verona, and Vienna. The avenue takes its name from the Porta Venezia, one of the city's gates, and it grew into a fashionable residential street lined with substantial town houses and apartment blocks. Around 1900, Milan was expanding quickly as an industrial and commercial center, and its wealthier districts were showing off new facades and tree-lined boulevards. The album sequence suggests the picture was made or collected as part of a traveler's record of Italian and French cities.
