Washington's Landhaus," whose German title suggests a country house, depicts George Washington's Mount Vernon estate on the Potomac River in Virginia. Washington managed and expanded the property for decades before he died there in 1799. Prints like this one circulated through the 1800s, when the estate was becoming a national shrine, a process that led the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association to buy it in 1858. The record names no maker or exact date, so the engraving is best read as evidence of how the house was pictured and remembered during the century after Washington's death.
