This view comes from the 1893 Rand McNally guide to Chicago, a book that pictured the city from an elevated angle so that streets, rooftops, and landmarks could be read at a glance. Chicago had rebuilt after the 1871 fire into one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, and by 1893 it was hosting the World's Columbian Exposition, which drew millions of visitors to the city that year. Maps and pictorial views like this one were prepared for those visitors, who needed to find their way and to see how the city had changed. The bird's-eye convention makes the scene useful as a record of the built environment of the period, with its dense blocks of commercial and residential buildings.
