A color lithograph dated 1871, this piece belongs to a class of printed tobacco package labels that were pasted onto cigar boxes, tins, and pouches to sell the product at a glance. Lithography allowed printers to reproduce bright, multicolored designs in large runs, and by the 1870s such labels were a common form of commercial art in the United States and Europe. Makers often combined decorative borders, lettering, and pictorial vignettes to set one brand apart from the crowded shelves of a tobacconist's counter. The record does not name the brand or the artist, so the design details are the best guide to its original use.
