*Westward Ho!* is a color lithograph from about 1868, printed as a tobacco package label, a form of advertising meant to catch a buyer's eye on a crowded shop shelf. Its title points to the pioneer West, a theme that ran through American popular imagery after the Civil War, when railroads and settlers pushed beyond the Mississippi. The label was made by Louis Nelke & Co. of Chicago, a city that had become a busy center for commercial lithography, and its copyright was registered to James Geary.
