A young girl in an apron, leaning on a broom with a pipe in her mouth, makes this color lithograph unusual among tobacco labels. It was issued as a stock form, a standard design that a tobacco dealer could have overprinted with a brand name, and it was printed by the Hatch Lithograph Company at 32 and 34 West Street in New York. The record dates it only to the 1870s, a period when American tobacco packaging depended heavily on bright color prints. Humorous scenes of children and women smoking were meant to catch the eye on crowded shop shelves, and today they offer a window into the attitudes of that time.
