Lean Jack was a brand of smoking tobacco, and this lithograph served as its package label. The print was entered for copyright by Solomon, Spear & Co. in the Southern District of New York and deposited on August 9, 1867, which is why a copy survives in the Library of Congress. After the Civil War, tobacco makers relied on colorful lithographed labels to set their brands apart on crowded shop shelves. Registering a label under federal copyright law gave the maker some protection against imitators, so the record also offers a useful glimpse of how those businesses guarded their designs.
