A prizefighter, a clown, and a dog share the frame in this color lithograph advertising Chew Punch plug tobacco, made by the National Tobacco Works of Louisville, Kentucky. Louisville was a major center of American tobacco manufacturing, and the Giles Lithograph Company printed the poster, whose large, bright sheets helped makers compete for space in saloons, stores, and street-side displays. Dated around 1886, it reflects the period's fondness for comic and sporting imagery, which pitched chewing tobacco as a lively, good-humored pastime.
