A cigar label titled "Select," advertising tobacco of the finest quality from Vuelta Abajo, points to one of Cuba's most prized growing districts in the west of the island. Strobridge & Co., a Cincinnati lithography firm, produced many colorful labels like this for cigar boxes and tobacco packages in the 1870s. Its subject tags note both smoking and women, a pairing that was common in the period's tobacco advertising. Collectors now value such labels as commercial art and as evidence of how tobacco was sold.
