Among the many quick-cure advertisements of the 1890s, this color lithograph promises that Narcoti-cure will break the tobacco habit in four to ten days, at a price of $5.00. The poster was issued by the Narcoti Chemical Co. of Springfield, Massachusetts, around 1895, during a crowded market for patent remedies aimed at tobacco and opium dependence. Such cures were sold with bold testimonials and little medical evidence, and the federal Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 later began to restrict their claims. The printed offer of a free book of particulars shows how these firms relied on mailed literature to reach buyers far from their factories.
