Unlike most street views of the capital, this one is tied to a named business: the Herald, at 809 9th Street. The Washington Herald was a daily newspaper published in the capital from 1906 until it merged into the Washington Times-Herald in 1939. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington's streets and buildings in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative around 1920, though the title and date are unverified. The plate shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which affect how the image reads.
