Horace Greeley, the newspaper editor who founded the New-York Tribune and later ran for president in 1872, is the subject of this steel engraving, which dates to about 1871, the year before his death. The print reproduces a painting by Chappel, and it was copyrighted by the firm Johnson, Fry & Co., a New York publisher known for portrait engravings of prominent Americans. Engravings like this one were widely sold and hung in homes and offices, so they offered many Americans their most familiar image of a public figure. The record notes that some details come from an unverified caption card, so readers should treat the specific attributions with that in mind.
