Francis Dana, a Massachusetts lawyer and member of the Continental Congress, appears here in a painting reproduced as a halftone for *Harper's Monthly* in 1902. His most consequential years came abroad. In 1781 he went to St. Petersburg as the first American minister to Russia and spent two years trying, without success, to win recognition for the new republic from Catherine the Great. He later returned home to serve on the Massachusetts bench. The halftone process, which broke a painting into a pattern of fine dots that a press could print with ink, is what let a magazine of that era carry a likeness like this one to a broad readership.
