Taken on a June 1925 trip to Hot Springs, Virginia, this portrait shows John D. Rockefeller Jr. away from his New York business and philanthropic work, resting at the mountain resort. Hot Springs, in the Allegheny Mountains, had drawn wealthy visitors for well over a century to its warm mineral baths and grand hotels. The picture was made by Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that supplied news and portrait photographs to newspapers and magazines, so it reflects the era's appetite for images of prominent men at leisure.
